RESP Basics: How to Start Planning for Your Child’s Education in Manitoba

If you’re a parent in Winnipeg wondering where to start saving for your child’s education, a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is usually the first place to look. It isn’t complicated once you understand the basics, and the government adds money on top of what you contribute, which is hard to beat anywhere else in your financial plan.

What an RESP Actually Is

An RESP is a registered account that lets your contributions grow tax-deferred until your child withdraws the money for post-secondary education. You don’t get a tax deduction for contributing, the way you would with an RRSP, but the growth and government grants are generally taxed in your child’s hands when withdrawn, and students typically pay little to no tax on it given their income level.

The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG)

This is the part that makes RESPs worth prioritizing. The federal government matches 20% of the first $2,500 you contribute per child each year, up to $500 in grant money annually, with a lifetime maximum of $7,200 per child. If you can’t contribute the full amount in a given year, the unused grant room carries forward, so catching up later by contributing $5,000 in a single year can draw up to $1,000 in matching grant that year.

The Canada Learning Bond

For lower-income families, the Canada Learning Bond can add up to $2,000 to an RESP with no personal contribution required at all. Simply opening the account and confirming eligibility can trigger the first deposit, which means it’s worth checking even if you’re not in a position to contribute right now.

A Manitoba-Specific Note

Unlike a few other provinces that offer their own RESP top-up grants, Manitoba does not currently have a dedicated provincial RESP grant. That means the CESG and Canada Learning Bond are the main government contributions available to families here, which makes it even more worthwhile to make sure you’re claiming both correctly. Program details can change, so it’s worth confirming current numbers before you open or adjust an RESP.

Where This Fits Into a Bigger Plan

An RESP is usually just the starting point. The harder question is often what happens after your child starts school, or after they finish. Our Education & Life Planning service is built around that longer view, not just the savings account.
